Everton Unexpected Move Takes Farhad Moshiri By Surprise

Farhad Moshiri could find it difficult to sell Everton if there isn’t any competitive tension to help get a takeover deal over the line.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s surprising the Everton owner seems to be relaxed about the situation despite so far failing to complete a deal.

John Textor was granted a period of exclusivity on 15 August to buy Moshiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park.

But one complication is the American’s 45-per-cent stake in Crystal Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.

After speaking to several people involved with the Merseysiders, journalist Matt Slater told The Athletic FC Podcast on 4 September there isn’t currently anything happening on the takeover front.

Everton have already seen two takeover deals collapse after 777 Partners failed to get a deal over the line, while The Friedkin Group pulled out of talks.

Borson insisted competition is needed to complete a deal after previously advising Manchester City in a similar situation.

“Moshiri seems quite relaxed,” Borson told Football Insider.

“In the absence of him clearly running around looking for an alternative, that would suggest they do have the money to get them through to January.

“It seems surprising, but if he’s calm, then who are we from the outside to say he’s wrong?

“He’s got access to the numbers we don’t have.

“It was quite a while ago, but I was in a similar position as an advisor to Man City when we were trying to sell in 2007.

“You need a bit of competitive tension and you need some interest in the deal because, without the competitive tension, it’s very hard to get the deal over the line.”
