Ex-Premier League Star Eyes New Chapter
Tyler Robert has expressed optimism about his new opportunity at Northampton Town after joining the League One club on a season-long loan from Birmingham City.
Roberts, who is contracted to Birmingham until 2027, was pushed down the pecking order following the summer arrivals of Luke Harris, Willum Willumsson, and Jay Stansfield. He managed just two appearances in the Carabao Cup but was left out of all league matchday squads, prompting his deadline-day move to Sixfields.
Speaking to The Northampton Chronicle and Echo, Roberts shared his desire for consistency during his time at Northampton. “Consistency,” Roberts said when asked what he hoped to gain from the loan spell. “That’s what I have struggled with over the last couple of seasons. I think I’ve been unfortunate with injuries and mismanagement, but I’m coming into this season knowing my body is strong.”
Since joining Birmingham from Leeds United in 2023, Roberts has had a tough time with injuries. He managed only 19 appearances in his debut season, starting eight times. An injury in his first match against Swansea City sidelined him for three months, and although he was fit towards the end of the season, he was left on the bench for much of Birmingham’s final fixtures.
Despite these setbacks, Roberts is determined to make the most of his time at Northampton. “I’ve had a good off-season and I had a good pre-season, and I’m just hoping I can get into the team first of all and make the team better, and then perform at a good level consistently,” he said. “I just want to show the ability that I know I have. I’ve struggled to have much time to do that over the last two years, but I know the work I’ve put in, and if I get the chance, I’m ready to show what I’m all about.”
The versatile forward, who can play in multiple attacking positions, believes Northampton offers him the perfect platform to rediscover his form. “Coming here just felt right after speaking to the manager,” Roberts added. “I’ll get an opportunity to play a good amount of games this season, and that’s what I want.”
Roberts now aims to prove his fitness and help Northampton in their League One campaign.
Who is Tyler Roberts?
Roberts began his football journey at West Bromwich Albion’s academy, which he joined at seven years old. He made his Premier League debut for West Brom in May 2016, becoming only the second player born in 1999 to play in the league then.
Roberts spent several seasons on loan at various clubs, including Oxford United, Shrewsbury Town, and Walsall, where he gained valuable experience in the English Football League. His impressive performances earned him a transfer to Leeds United in January 2018 for a fee reportedly rising to £4 million. However, his time at Leeds was hampered by injuries, limiting his impact during their promotion to the Premier League.
Despite these setbacks, Roberts has made 100 appearances for Leeds United and contributed to their successful promotion campaign. He has also represented the Welsh national team, earning over 20 caps since his debut in 2018. Known for his versatility, Roberts can play across various attacking positions.
Writer’s View
Roberts’ loan move to Northampton Town could be the fresh start he needs to rekindle his form. After a frustrating period at Birmingham City, where injuries limited his opportunities, Northampton offers him the chance to shine once again. Roberts is still just 25, meaning there’s plenty of time to rediscover the consistency that has eluded him in recent seasons.
At his best, Roberts is a dynamic forward capable of playing across multiple positions. His versatility will be an asset to Northampton, and his hunger to prove himself is evident. In his own words, he’s entering this loan spell with his body feeling strong and a renewed sense of purpose. He knows what he’s capable of, and it’s now a question of translating that into consistent pitch performance.
The key for Roberts will be avoiding the injury setbacks that have plagued him and building momentum with regular minutes. If he can establish himself as a focal point in Northampton’s attack, there’s every chance he can rediscover the form that once made him a prospect to watch at Leeds and West Brom. For both player and club, this could be a mutually beneficial partnership.
