Everton striker spotted holding another club’s scarf after agreeing 7-figure permanent exit

Everton are on the brink of seeing a striker exit confirmed after Neal Maupay was spotted with a Marseille scarf after arriving in France.

A photograph of the Toffees striker was posted on X on 29 August by Mode55489648 showing him with a fan as he is set to complete a move to Ligue 1.

L’Equipe reported on 29 August that a paid loan had been agreed with a mandatory purchase at the end of it and a sell-on clause included.

The Athletic reported the same day that the deal is set to be worth an initial £5million which could rise to £8.4million

Neal Maupay arrives in France to complete Everton exit to Marseille

Maupay’s move from Brighton has never panned out at Goodison Park so securing a reasonable fee despite him entering the final year of his contract is a positive outcome

Marseille had made an offer of a straight loan [L’Equipe, 20 August] which would have been little help to the Toffees and while it will reduce the striking options very close to the deadline his contribution in front of goal has always been minimal.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in the same contract situation and has refused an extension thanks to the ownership uncertainty

Premier League clubs are now circling for a late move which could leave Sean Dyche dangerously light up front, with Arsenal joining Chelsea and Newcastle [Caught Offside, 27 August

A deal with Newcastle could help the Toffees secure Kieran Trippier [TBR Football, 25 August], but Chelsea may be the preferred option as they are considering the possibility of moving Armando Broja to Goodison Park [The Athletic, 27 August].

Maupay’s exit makes the margin for error in the final hours of the window at striker smaller, with Youssef Chermiti out injured, but in isolation is the right outcome for the former Brighton and Brentford man.

In other Everton news, a late Toffees signing that looked to be wrapped up is now in danger after a hijack attempt turned the player’s head.
