Clemens Dominates as Yankees Rout Mariners, 8-0
The 1999 Yankees continued their dominance over the American League West, cruising to an 8-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on August 27th at Yankee Stadium. Roger Clemens delivered a masterful performance, pitching eight shutout innings and allowing just four hits while striking out nine.
After a scoreless first inning, the Yankees took control of the game in the second. Chuck Knoblauch walked, Derek Jeter singled, and Paul O’Neill drove in Knoblauch with a groundout to give New York a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Knoblauch.
Clemens kept the Mariners’ offense at bay throughout the game, retiring 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. Jeff Nelson closed out the game, securing the Yankees’ first win in the three-game series.
The victory improved the Yankees’ record to 78-49, further solidifying their position atop the American League East.
