Former Birmingham City midfielder Hannibal Mejbri could be set to return to England and to the Championship this month after transfer links emerged involving him and second tier pace-setters Burnley. Hannibal spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Blues from Manchester United and played 41 times, scoring a single goal in a win over West Brom.
The Tunisian returned to United at the beginning of last season, but his stay at Old Trafford was short-lived and he headed out to Spain in January and joined La Liga side Sevilla on loan for the second half of last season – but that moved to be a pretty miserable experience and he returned this summer after only six appearances and a single start
Hannibal is well down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, who has Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro to call upon, and a sale this summer could well happen. The Athletic report that Burnley, who have taken six points and scored nine goals in their opening two league games of the season as they eye an immediate top flight return, are exploring a move.
They’ve just sold Sander Berge to Fulham for a deal which could be worth £25m in time, and they’re after a replacement as Scott Parker looks to add to his inherited squad with which he intends to challenge for promotion this term. Hannibal has a single year left on his United deal and could leave on a permanent basis or as part of a loan arrangement.
Hannibal is still only 21 but has already earned himself 27 international caps for his native Tunisia. During his time under John Eustace at St Andrew’s, where he played alongside another United academy product in Tahith Chong who had returned on a permanent basis after a successful loan himself, Hannibal endeared himself to the Blues fanbase with his all-action approach and touch of quality in the middle of the pitch.
