Burnley told to stand firm in Brentford, Ipswich Town transfer battle

Burnley have key decisions to make in the next few weeks, with the transfer window coming to a close on August 30.

Dara O’Shea, 25, is one player that could be on his way out of Turf Moor, with both Brentford and Ipswich Town interested. However, it has been reported by Football Insider that the Irishman has rejected a move to Premier League new boys Ipswich, in favour of a switch to the Bees.

Burnley are currently in the midst of a number of players being linked with exits, including Sander Berge, who looks likely to join Manchester United this summer after a successful season in 2023/24.

However, unlike the Norwegian, O’Shea is not vital to Scott Parker’s plans this season, and may find it ever so slightly easier to earn his move back to the top flight in the coming weeks, as the Clarets have strength in depth in the centre of defence.

Burnley’s relegation is having a knock-on effect on outgoings

Under the guidance of Vincent Kompany in the Premier League last season, Burnley signed 15 players in the summer transfer window, and they will now find it hard to keep hold of some of them.

It can be said that the club signed too many players last year, and it perhaps took away from the togetherness that won the team promotion in Kompany’s maiden campaign in the north-west.

However, with Parker now at the helm, the Clarets seem to be in more control, and will be able to sell some players that have aspirations higher than the club’s current position.

FLW’s Burnley Fan Pundit, Nathan Rogers, believes that O’Shea is a player that can be allowed to be sold: “We’re not in a terrible position where we need to sell every player from a financial point of view.

“We’ve got a few players that have come to Burnley while we were in the Premier League with the expectation of themselves personally staying in the division, but seeing players like O’Shea linked makes sense to me and I understand why, because he’s got a pretty decent ceiling.”

“He’s a good centre-half, and he’s versatile. He’s alright on both sides,” he continued. “I think he would not be a terrible loss as we’ve got quite a deep squad of back-up centre-halves that can step in and replace him if he is to leave.”

Burnley must still make money on O’Shea

O’Shea only joined the Clarets last season, making the switch from West Bromwich Albion for £7 million.

Nevertheless, the promise of Premier League football could be too much for Burnley to deny, with the 25-year-old more than capable of playing in the division, particularly if he continues to develop at his current rate.

Nathan will be happy to see O’Shea move back to the Premier League for the right price, despite his qualities: “Obviously, I’d rather start the season with him, because he’s fast, he’s powerful, he’s good on both sides, and he reads the game well.

“At Championship level he’s probably up there with one of the best in the league, so, one side of me is fine with him going because we’ve got good replacements. The other side would be yes, let’s sell him, but only at the right price.

“I don’t want to see us being short-changed. I think we’re in a final financial position to not be held to ransom by clubs and be low-balled with offers.

“So, losing O’Shea won’t be the end of the world, I think that would be the overall thought on this. We’ve got players who are just as good as him.”
