Chris Davies gives Jordan James transfer latest after midfielder’s Birmingham City absence

Chris Davies has confirmed Jordan James is close to leaving Birmingham City.

Wales international James didn’t feature in Blues’ League One opener with Reading in order to finalise a move away from St Andrew’s and French club Rennes is expected to be his destination. The 20-year-old was replaced in Blues’ midfield by Marc Leonard as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Reading on the opening day of the League One season.

Blues have planned for James’ departure with the acquisitions of Leonard and Fulham loanee Luke Harris but they could yet dip into the market to bolster their midfield options.

Asked whether James is on the verge of leaving, Davies replied: “I can’t give you anything definitive on that but it looks like it’s heading in that direction, yes.”

James has risen through the ranks of Blues’ academy to become a regular in the first team over the last three seasons. He will depart having made in excess of 100 appearances and he registered eight goals in the Championship last term.

Blues fielded offers from Italian side Atalanta for James during the January transfer window and multiple Premier League sides have been linked with him. But Rennes, who finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season, appear to have stolen a march on them.
