Wolves could be in the market for a centre-back

Wolves could be in the market for central defender Nico Elvedi after missing out on the signing from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer.

Wolves showed interest in the player a year ago, but could not get a deal over the line. However, Gary O’Neil is thought to still be keen on acquiring the defender’s signature this summer. Elvedi would be a good fit for Wolves, who are still seeking a replacement for Max Kilman – he joined West Ham United in a £40m earlier this summer. The Switzerland international impressed at Borussia Monchengladbach last season where he played 30 Bundesliga games.

Sports Witness has reported that O’Neil’s side are still in for a 27-year-old, who has a release clause thought to be around £8m to £10m – a bargain for a player with more than 300 games in the top flight of German football.

Recently, he spoke to the German Publication Wetterauer Zeitung when discussing a possible exit, saying: “Of course, after nine years you start to think about whether something new would be good. It has to be something interesting that makes sense. The transfer window is open until August 31st, something can always happen before then.”

If a deal is going to happen it is still currently in its initial stages with no formal bid or approach reported as of yet. However, Bild reported that Wolves tried to sign the player last summer and he agreed on personal terms ahead of a proposed move that eventually did not materialise.
