Ipswich Town: Idris El Mizouni on signing for Oxford United

Recently departed ex-Ipswich Town midfielder Idris El Mizouni says he wants to establish himself as a Championship player with new side Oxford United.

The Tunisian international midfielder, 23, signed a three-year deal at the newly-promoted U’s last week, leaving Town for £400,000.

El Mizouni is a product of Town’s academy and left having made 16 starts and 10 sub appearances for the club, with his last game in blue coming in the 1-0 EFL Cup defeat to Colchester United back in August 2022.

He spent the last two seasons on loan at Leyton Orient, helping them win the League Two title and finish 11th in League One, and was heading into the final year of his contract at Portman Road.

Speaking to the Witney Gazette, the midfielder revealed that he talked to fellow former Town player Kyle Edwards before making the move to Oxford. He’ll also be reunited with another ex-Blue, Greg Leigh, at the U’s.

“It’s a massive move and the first time I’ve got a permanent move after signing for Ipswich,” he enthused. “It’s a big move for me.

“The aim is to establish myself as a Championship player. I made four appearances when they went down from the Championship, but that wasn’t enough.

“I just need to put my head down and hopefully have a good season with the club, and kick on from there really.

“I spoke to Kyle Edwards, and he told me good things. That made it a bit clearer for me, but I’m here because I made the decision.

“It’s good to see Kyle and Greg because I had a good time with them at Ipswich. The rest are fresh new faces.”
