Chris Davies says Birmingham City need to make ‘several’ new signings to shore up their threadbare squad.

‎Two mix and match Blues XIs played45 minutes each in a 5-0 defeat to SC Paderborn 07 on Saturday to open the pre-season campaign. All four of the club’s signings to date featured in a match which highlighted Blues’ lack of strength in depth.

Blues need to strengthen all over the park but particularly in defence where they are two centre-backs and potentially two full-backs short if Manny Longelo completes a transfer away from St Andrew’s.

“I think we need several,” admitted Blues boss Davies. “I wouldn’t give it a definitive figure but we need several at the very least. We’ve obviously only got 12-13 senior players with us so that tells you something. In a 25-man squad you are going to need a few more.

That’s an ongoing process day by day, week by week, that we’re working on, but the encouraging thing is the players we have brought in so far all look really good in terms of training and their adaptation to our environment. Their performances today were positive. If we can bring in more like that then we’ll be OK.”

The youngsters will likely get more chances against Solihull Moors and Shrewsbury Town next week when Blues’ preparations for the League One season ramp up.
