LATEST: Leeds United Fans Annoyed As ‘Global Superpower’ Commits Cardinal Sin
Paul Robinson understands fans’ frustration about the colour red being used on the new Leeds United kit but believes the decision is justified.
The club released their new kit on Friday 5 July, though the announcement was greeted with a rather mixed reaction from the passionate fans at Elland Road.
Leeds’ long-standing rivalry with Manchester United continues to this day, despite not being in the same division next season, and some fans have taken issue with Red Bull’s red logo on the front of the new shirts.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “Absolutely, I can understand the frustration. But you can also understand the input that Red Bull have had, however many millions they have pumped into the club.
“Their first time on a Leeds United shirt, they’re not going to want to change their logo. It has certainly split opinion. A lot of fans are able to look past the red on it. It’s an old-fashioned thing between Yorkshire and Lancashire – red is not the choice of colour in Leeds.
“You also don’t mess with a Leeds United kit. You don’t put red on it. At the same time, Red Bull are a global superpower. They’re not just offering financial input, but also expertise in business. You only have to look at Formula One and other sports where they have such an impact
“It is narrow-minded enough about the red on the new shirt, as it could stop the impact of the investment. I understand what some fans are saying, but actually, a lot of fans are okay with it.”
Leeds United defended as Red Bull kit decision made at Elland Road
While some fans will continue to take issue with the logo on the new Leeds kit, the financial benefit from Red Bull’s investment cannot be understated.
The club were under a lot of pressure to balance the books after missing out on promotion to the Premier League last season, a concern that has steadily reduced since the Championship play-off final.
The Whites, of course, need to listen to the opinions of their own fanbase, but sometimes it is impossible to please everyone. And with Red Bull being the new shirt sponsor, they have every right to advertise their brand.
