Huddersfield Town chief makes extraordinary transfer claim about Birmingham City

Birmingham City beat Huddersfield Town to the signing of the best striker in League One last season.

Owner Kevin Nagle claimed Birmingham City weren’t entertaining the idea of signing Alfie May until they were made aware of Huddersfield Town’s interest.

May signed for Blues last week, penning a three-year deal, in a fee worth around £775,000 if Football Insider’s report is to be believed. Nagle did not disclose the identity of the player of the player they missed out on, but all hints suggest that he was speaking about last season’s League One top scorer.

The American also added that Birmingham had also targeted some of the players that they have managed to sign. Lasse Sorensen, Mickel Miller, Herbie Kane and Antony Evans have all signed on at the John Smith’s Stadium with the latter being loosely linked before he joined the Yorkshire outfit.

“I’ll say this much. The club that got him, they weren’t even thinking about him four days before that,” Nagle said in a video with Dave Carmichael which was published on X. “I think what I’m impressed with is they’re kind of watching what we were doing. They actually targeted at least one, maybe two other players that we did sign. I’ve been impressed by the fact that that club is looking at our recruitment team, and seeing what kind of moves we’re making. “What I’m going to say is we’re not going to pay what that person got paid. There were a lot of rumours that went out on it, I’m not going to validate that, but it’s not fair to our players in the locker room. “He was paid an extraordinary amount, if you look to see what his history was, it just didn’t make [sense]. Now maybe he’ll turn out to be great, and I hope he does, just not against Town.”

In an interview with Charlton Athletic, May revealed a huge factor behind moving to Birmingham was that his family could not settle after moving to South London following his move to Charlton Athletic last summer.

May submitted a transfer request to Charlton before he joined Birmingham after they were unsuccessful in their first bid and in the end, Charlton and May reached an agreement which suited all parties.
