“£25-30 Million” Defender Could Move To Birmingham City From SPFL

SPFL side Rangers could have a battle on their hands to keep hold of star defender Connor Goldson as Birmingham City, recently relegated from the Championship attempt to convince the player to drop into League One.

Chris Davies’ side are keen to ensure their stay in the third tier is short and are willing to spend their way to glory with a reported £20 million transfer kitty. The signings of Alfie May and Hansson have already demonstrated their ambition, but the potential loss of players like Bacuna means urgent action is needed.

Goldson is part of the Rangers side that have travelled to the Netherlands for pre-season, likely indicating that there is no deal close. Interest from Saudi Arabia and a lack of form around a knee injury have caused some to doubt his future at Ibrox.

He has been one of the first names on the team sheet during his time at Ibrox with former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness even suggesting a fee of “£25-30 million” to secure his services to Football Insider!

“I really don’t know a valuation but I don’t see it being much more than £25-£30m. I know that Steven Gerrard would love him to be down at Al-Ettifaq. That’s the sort of money that I see for Goldson.

“I don’t see that big a market but Birmingham, in League One, may be prepared to pay that. They have big room for money to be spent there and will have a decent budget in League One, more than most clubs in the Championship.”

Birmingham City are “willing to spend big” to secure his services according to Football Scotland via Ibroxnews.com but they are unlikely to spend as much as Wyness suggested as they look to convince him to make the move to England. The club’s transfer record is currently £6 million. Rangersnews.uk has suggested the fee will be approximately £2.1 million.

The 31-year-old began his career as part of the Shrewsbury Town youth set up, before going on to establish himself as part of the first team, making over 100 appearances for the club. In 2013, he enjoyed a brief spell at Cheltenham Town.

His impressive performances for Salop prompted Brighton and Hove Albion to sign the player for an undisclosed fee in 2015. However, a heart defect blighted his spell there sidelining him for much of 2017. He did, however, recover and took a place in the squad.

In 2018 Rangers secured the signing of the player. He has now made over 300 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals and 15 assists, but some high profile mistakes and knee surgery cost him his place in the team.

A statement signing for Birmingham City?

Birmingham have arguably already made a couple of statement signings this summer and this could be, arguably another of them. The player is not a League One player, and had it not been for his injury and a couple of mistakes, we likely wouldn’t be having this discussion.

The £25-30 million valuation is wildly incorrect and is more than the entire Birmingham City budget and more than four times their transfer record. The suggested £2.1 million figure seems much more realistic and achievable.
