Lars Ricken has revealed that Edin Terzic recommended as his replacement when he made the decision to step down as Borussia Dortmund head coach.

Edin Terzic made the shock decision to resign as Borussia Dortmund head coach last month as he felt that the club needed a new name in the dugout. The Black and Yellows moved swiftly to appoint Nuri Sahin as his replacement. And Lars Ricken has now revealed that Terzic recommended Sahin as his successor.

“[Edin Terzic] decided for himself that it was best for BVB to bring in a new coach. He then recommended to me that Nuri Sahin should do it, because Nuri is a top coach and will get better and better. It was important for Edin that everything went smoothly and that he is still welcome in the BVB family.” the BVB CEO said during his interview on Phoenix with Jörg Thadeusz.

Terzic came ever so close to leading Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title last year, and led the club to the UEFA Champions League final in the recently concluded campaign. But he struggled to win over the BVB supporters at times with his pragmatic style of play.

Ricken wants to see attack-minded and progressive football at Borussia Dortmund in the coming season, and is keen to ensure that fans leave the stadium happy after every game. “We can’t promise any titles. We haven’t been German champions for twelve years. But it’s about attitude.”

“How do we want to play football? What do we want to offer the fans? We have to make sure that when the fans leave the stadium, they are already looking forward to the next game. We want to play with courage and attacking intent. If we manage that, success will come. Nuri Sahin, Sebastian Kehl and I have won the Bundesliga title seven times between us. Our ambitions will not be left behind in the dressing room.”

Nuri Sahin will have his sights set on leading Borussia Dortmund’s revamp this summer. The first-team players will return to training this week to begin preparations for the start of the new campaign.
