Norwich City: Kenny McLean cannot let Rangers opportunity slip

Rangers have pulled the plug on a deal to sign Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean this summer, according to Rangers Review.

Speaking on their Daily Update on YouTube (3 July), the news outlet report that a deal is no longer expected to happen for the 32-year-old because of personal terms despite being “in the post“.

McLean is believed to have wanted a longer-term contract at Ibrox than the club were willing to offer, and a deal is now off the table “for the time being”.

“Another player who has been heavily linked with Rangers is Kenny McLean,” Derek Clark said. “We spoke about experience, we touched on how a deal would have to be right for Rangers.

“Led to believe now that a deal is off. A bit of an impasse between what the player wants and what the club are willing to offer. I’m led to believe it might be to do with contract length, but we’re led to believe that deal isn’t happening for the time being.”

Rangers make the right decision on Kenny McLean transfer

Philippe Clement made it clear before the summer transfer window started that the squad at Ibrox needed to be completely rebuilt, and the business so far has shown the priority to be getting the age of the squad down.

Jefte, Clinton Nsiala and Connor Barron are the outfield players to have joined so far and all are under the age of 21, with Hamza Igamane expected to join in the very near future too.

That’s a clear strategy but with John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Borna Barisic all leaving there is a need for some experience in the squad to ensure they don’t get overawed in the big games.

That is where McLean may have come in handy this summer as a Rangers fan who cares about the club but also has experience at a high level.

But any deal simply had to make sense for Rangers above anything else, and if it doesn’t then the board have done the right thing in walking away from a deal to look at alternatives.
