Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon played just two minutes plus stoppage time for England against Slovenia

Anthony Gordon has promised there is “a lot more to come” after making his major tournament debut for England.

The Newcastle United winger is no stranger to the international arena following his heroics at the under-21 Euros last summer. However, he finally made his senior bow on the biggest stage against Slovenia.

Gareth Southgate gave Gordon just two minutes plus stoppage time – despite England looking leggy, narrow and lacklustre in the final third. It took the 23-year-old just moments to make an impact when he started a move that almost resulted in Cole Palmer scoring

Gordon received praise for his brutally honest assessment of England’s performance after the game. He told reporters: “I think our aim was to make a statement and sort of correct the performance we’ve had in the past two games. I still think we’re in that place. I think we’ve still got to do better.

“I just think we can do so much better. That’s the problem. We’ve got such good players. In training, we’re so good every day. We do everything right. And then it’s just not clicking. Hopefully, in the coming games, it will (click) because we need to start really attacking teams and dominating games.

“I don’t think it’s nerves. I mean, we’ve all played on big stages for a while. So I don’t think nerves are the best thing to put it down to. I just think football is like that sometimes. I think we’re controlling games really well, we keep the ball well. But that direct approach, causing problems and going for teams, is probably what we’re missing.”

The Toon winger has now pledged his eye-catching cameo was just the beginning. Gordon posted on social media: “Major tournament debut and into the last 16. More to come!”
