Surprising: 24 years old Too Expensive For The Bulls.

on

The Chicago Bulls are facing a potential conundrum with their young backcourt, particularly concerning Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu.

While White has garnered significant attention for his performance, Dosunmu’s substantial leap in the second half of the season deserves a closer look. Averaging 16.3 points per game on impressive shooting splits—52.4% from the field, 43.5% from three, and 83.5% from the free-throw line—Dosunmu’s development could force the Bulls into making some tough decisions.

Dosunmu’s growth in balancing shot selection and volume, combined with his strong on-ball defense, has made him an invaluable asset. His efficiency in catch-and-shoot scenarios, knocking down 40.6% of his attempts, highlights his capability as a reliable floor spacer. This evolution in his game makes him a strong candidate for a starting role next to Coby White, raising questions about the future lineup when Zach LaVine returns from injury.

Contractually, Dosunmu’s current deal is extremely team-friendly, paying him $7 million next season and $7.5 million the following year. This low salary, juxtaposed with his burgeoning talent, places the Bulls in a difficult position. The restrictions of the veteran extension rule limit Chicago to offering Dosunmu only 140% of his $7.5 million salary, meaning they might lose him to unrestricted free agency in 2026 unless they act strategically.

The Bulls need to consider their advantageous position. With Dosunmu and White both on affordable contracts, they have significant trade leverage. Teams like the Denver Nuggets, who need a backup combo guard, or the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are planning for life after Mike Conley, could be interested in acquiring Dosunmu. The Nuggets could offer assets like Julian Strawther and future picks, while the Timberwolves could leverage Dosunmu’s low cost and Bird Rights for a seamless transition into a starting role in the future.

The Bulls’ recent reluctance to capitalize on trade opportunities, as seen with Alex Caruso at the 2024 trade deadline, suggests a need for a shift in strategy. By acknowledging the value of their young assets and exploring trade possibilities, the Bulls can better dictate their own fate and potentially secure a more promising future.
