Newcastle United summer signing Trevan Sanusi has had his debut season cut short because of a knee injury.

The 16-year-old moved to Newcastle from Birmingham City last year having reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Sanusi has gone on to make 22 appearances for the club’s academy – namely with the under-18s – although has featured at under-21s level and during the UEFA Youth League campaign.

But with just under a month of the 2023-24 campaign remaining, Sanusi has announced he will play no further part.

Speaking to Newcastle’s matchday programme, Sanusi said: “I have recently torn my meniscus in my knee and it’s frustrating that I’ve had to end my season early. thought I was in good form beforehand, especially playing for the under-21s and making a few starts.

“I would’ve loved to have played every game and helped my team and it’s an unfortunate way to end. However, I am a person that is very determined to keep playing and If I didn’t have to stop, I wouldn’t because I enjoy games a lot.

“I’m going to do my best to recover as quickly as possible by using every support I’ve got and doing it properly. When I’m back, I’ll compete with myself based on this season to be better for the next.”

Sanusi – who turns 17 later this month – hasn’t appeared for the Magpies since being called up by England under-17s for their European Championship qualifying triple-header against Northern Ireland, Hungary and France at St George’s Park last month.

The winger came on a substitute in a 5-0 win over Hungary but didn’t feature versus Northern Ireland or France.

Considering the number of injuries currently impacting Eddie Howe’s first-team squad, supporters had wondered if Sanusi might have been in line for some senior matchday experience.

In recent weeks, Amadou Diallo has been promoted from the under-21s, despite the former West Ham United forward reportedly set to be released this summer.
