Celtic, Rangers and Newcastle United ‘keen’ on Middlesbrough’s Tom Glover ahead of transfer window

Both sides of the Old Firm are said to be interested in making summer moves for Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover, with the Australian failing to establish himself as first choice on Teesside.

A report in Glover’s native Australia from FTBL suggests that both Rangers and Celtic are showing interest in the 26-year-old, along with Newcastle United and FC Copenhagen. The report claims Boro could be tempted to cash in on the goalkeeper who signed a contract to June 2027 last summer.

Glover joined Boro on a free transfer from Melbourne City, having helped the A-League outfit make the Championship final. He has spent the majority of the season as Michael Carrick’s second choice behind Seny Dieng but enjoyed a 12-game spell in the league from mid-December as the Senegal international picked up an injury.,

Dieng was eventually restored last month at Stoke City and his return to the side has coincided with an eight-game unbeaten run as well as a run of just six goals conceded in nine games. However, the report claims that it was only a fractured finger that resulted in Glover losing his spot, with surgery potentially on the cards in the near future despite Glover playing on for the time being as Dieng’s backup. That’s information that has never been revealed by Boro or Carrick.

If that’s true, it hasn’t put interested parties off, according to the report – with Celtic and Newcastle in particular known to be in the market for a new keeper this summer. At Celtic, they will need a new number one, with Joe Hart retiring at the end of the season. On Tyneside, having previously been linked with Dieng, they will also likely seek to sign a new keeper in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Loris Karius out of contract and Nick Pope’s injury struggles this season highlighting the need for a strong deputy.

Rangers, meanwhile, have Jack Butland in between their sticks. After a brilliant season for the Gers, they may just view Glover as a solid backup option to the England international, or they may be lining him up should Butlad move elsewhere.

Whether Boro would sell Glover or not likely depends on both the money offered and also what happens with Dieng this summer – with reports also linking him with a move away. While Boro have talented youngsters Sol Brynn and Zach Hemming returning from respective impressive loan spells this summer, Boro will be unlikely to want to lose all three of their senior goalkeepers in one summer, with the as-yet unused third-choice Jamie Jones out of contract at the end of the season.
