Leicester has taken steps just like premier league giant to dodge severe points deduction

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leicester City have taken steps to avoid a severe points deduction by launching a lawsuit against the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Foxes are “playing the long game” like Man City – who have 115 outstanding FFP charges.

Leicester were charged last month with breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) over a three-year period ending in the 2022-23 season.

The Midlands club hit back by releasing a club statement on (22 March) to confirm they have opened legal proceedings against the Premier League and EFL.

They have since posted (2 April) their accounts for the 2022-23 campaign, revealing a loss of £90million.

Wyness suggested an imminent change in financial rules could see Leicester escape a more severe punishment.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Well, I’m still waiting to see how the Premier League react to the threat of a lawsuit from Leicester.

“A lot will depend on that, and I think they’re playing the long game like how Man City have done.

“They’ll probably be hoping for a change in rules soon, which could be a mitigating factor.

“I think that would sway a commission.

“The big problem here is with their wage bill. They didn’t cut it effectively when they came into the Championship, and that will be their biggest issue.

“I was lucky at Aston Villa that we inherited a lot of players who had a 50% relegation clause in their contract. That allows an automatic cut of the wage bill.

“They wanted to ensure promotion, but it’s going to be tight for them. Either way, they’re going to have a headache.”
