Eddie Howe confident injured £20m Newcastle star will look so good when he’s back

There are reasons to be positive about Newcastle United’s run-in.

Indeed, while Eddie Howe’s side remain hugely inconsistent and very lax defensively, Newcastle may have key players back for the final few games of the campaign.

Still hunting qualification for the Europa League, that feels hugely important.

There is hope Nick Pope will be back before the end of the campaign. The same can be said of Joelinton, too.

Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier may return even sooner, albeit Newcastle’s luck on the injury front this season should temper excitement somewhat.

It would be very fitting for at least one of them to suffer a setback in their recovery, such has been the nature of this season.

All being well, however, and Newcastle will have a strong squad to finish the campaign with.

For his part, Howe is particularly excited about one player.

Eddie Howe excited for Callum Wilson’s return from injury

Though Alexander Isak has been thrilling in front of goal of late, he will need support at some point.

While there are currently no confirmed injury worries about the Sweden international, he has consistently picked up problems during his time at the club.

With that in mind, the eventual return of Callum Wilson feels important. Currently out of action with a pectoral problem, there is optimism he will play before the end of the season.

The £20m star may not be the most reliable when it comes to fitness but remains a palpable goal threat in the Premier League, having bagged seven times in eight starts this season.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Howe said (via BBC Sport): “Callum is doing the hard yards. He is running hard. It is an upper limb injury so he can keep fit and when he is ready to come back I think he will be looking good.”

Callum Wilson might only have a few games left as a Newcastle player

When he does return, Wilson could be set for his final few appearances as a Newcastle player.

Last month, Fabrizio Romano claimed his future at the club was uncertain, amid suggestions tensions have risen behind the scenes from Wilson’s part after a January move away was blocked.

Constant injuries have made it difficult to rely on Wilson but he’s been an excellent signing when he’s fit and his seemingly likely departure will be sad to see.
