£11m Nottingham Forest star Showcased last night
Andrew Omobamidele has grasped an opportunity to shine at Nottingham Forest in 2024. Over the last few days, he’s also showcased that he has what it takes on the international stage.
Several Forest stars have been away on international duty over the past few weeks. Anthony Elanga has been away with Sweden, whilst Matz Sels saved a penalty against Omobamidele’s Republic of Ireland over the weekend.
Last night, it was the turn of Forest central defender Omobamidele once again. After shining against Belgium on Saturday, he was handed another chance to start for his country against Switzerland.
The 21-year-old was a surprise summer signing for Forest from Norwich and he cost £11 million. Since the turn of the year, he’s been handed chances at the City Ground and has largely done well.
Last night, it was another disappointing result for the Republic of Ireland as they were beaten 1-0 by Switzerland. However, Omobamidele again received some praise from the national media.
National media enjoy performance of Forest star Andrew Omobamidele
Well, it will do Omobamidele’s development no harm at all to get a couple of games under his belt for his country. Now, he will return to Forest and hope to get a place back in Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.
Last night, it was a battling performance from the Irish again but ultimately it ended in vain. Forest youngster Omobamidele did get some praise, however, for his efforts at the back.
The Irish Mirror awarded him a 7/10 and claimed: “Threatened with two quick-fire headers before the break and defended well.”
He also received some positive comments from the Irish Independent, who gave him a 6/10 and said: “An early key clearance denied the Swiss a chance before Yvon Mvogo saved his header. Solid shift at the back and made way for Matt Doherty.”
The Republic of Ireland won’t be at Euro 2024 after a horror showing in qualifying. John O’Shea is currently in temporary charge and now the nation will search for a new head coach.
Omobamidele can be future City Ground star
The talented youngster cost the club £11 million from Norwich. Under the management of Steve Cooper, it always felt like he’d be one for the future, with the previous boss refusing to play him.
However, Espirito Santo hasn’t shared that sentiment. After scoring on his Forest debut in the FA Cup against Blackpool, Omobamidele has made a further nine appearances and hasn’t disappointed.
The centre-back has looked useful when called upon. Against Liverpool, he was brilliant and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side after a late sucker punch.
With Willy Boly limping out of international duty with the Ivory Coast, Forest might have a void to fill on Saturday. As a result, Omobamidele will now hope he gets the nod to partner Murillo.
