Jose Mourinho has teased his return to football management with Chelsea and Newcastle United put on red alert by his latest admission. The Special One has been out of work since January following his dismissal by Serie A outfit     Roma.

As far as big-name managers go, there are few that can eclipse Mourinho. A winner of two Champions League titles in the past, along with over 20 major honours, the Portuguese coach is one of the most successful managers in football history. However, since being sacked by Roma earlier this year, Mourinho hasn’t been tempted back into work

That could be about to change though, with the ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United chief telling Fabrizio Romano for Topps UK that he is ‘ready to start again’. When asked about his potential return to the dugout, Mourinho said: “I’m ready to start again. Sometimes when you end at a club you feel like you’re in need of a rest, of a think, to process things.”

He continued: “But in this case one day after I left, I was ready to go. I feel strong, I feel good, I love the work. I’m really ready. But I don’t want to make the wrong choice.

“I cannot accept something just because of the feeling and the passion to be back. So I have to be patient. Normally, we are in March, is something going to happen in March or April? It’s very difficult. So my objective is to start next summer.”

It will come as good news to those clubs that might be searching for a new manager in the off-season, given Mourinho is a coach whose reputation and track record speaks for itself. One team who have been linked with the 61-year-old is Newcastle, as questions begin to emerge over current boss Eddie Howe’s ability to consistently qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle look set to miss out on European football this season, which is unlikely to please the free-spending owners at St. James’ Park, who could look to pull the trigger as a result. The Magpies are currently just inside the top half of the Premier League table, one point and one place ahead of Chelsea, who have also been mooted as a potential destination for Mourinho.

Much like Howe at Newcastle, Mauricio Pochettino has come under fire for his side’s showings this term, with Todd Boehly and co. believed to be monitoring the situation. Should they decide to part ways with the former Tottenham Hotspur man, Mourinho has been tipped for another return to Stamford Bridge for what would be his third stint as manager.
