True or False, Rangers ace’s family shoots down Ibrox exit reports

Gheorghe Hagi has shot down suggestions that son Ianis is looking to leave Rangers on a permanent basis in the summer.

The Ibrox winger is on loan at Alaves this season after recovering from months out injured in Scotland, where he missed almost the entirety of 2022, and has so far made 22 appearances for the Spanish side.

But in response to reports apparently claiming that the 25-year-old doesn’t want to return to Rangers and is looking to be sold elsewhere Romanian legend Gheorghe has branded the idea “false”, while reaffirming the fact that the younger Hagi is still contracted to the Light Blues and will be back to his top level next season.

Hagi senior said, via the Daily Record (20 March): “He comes after a year-long injury, don’t forget! So we can’t see Ianis at his best now, but next year we will see him at his best. He still has a contract with Rangers, he is only on loan at Alaves.

“So he has a contract with Rangers, that’s for sure. I read that he wouldn’t have wanted Rangers either, which is false.”

A lot has changed since Hagi left Glasgow at the start of the season so if he does indeed rebound to show his best again perhaps he still has a Rangers future.

Under Michael Beale the indication was that his Ibrox career was over as he wasn’t getting much of a look in under the Englishman.

But since the former boss was sacked and replaced by Philippe Clement the entire situation at the club has been revived, and with it the form of others who looked like they might be not long for the club such as John Lundstram.
