Gamble taken by SPL title contenders has been revealed

Lee McCulloch believes Celtic decided to take a “gamble” by not making any big signings in the January transfer window despite being involved in a title race with Rangers.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on Sunday (17 March), the pundit said everybody was expecting the Hoops to spend big when the transfer window came around, but that they didn’t get any so-called big-hitters through the door.

He added that it will be interesting to see how the title race pans out as it could “still go either way”, with the Old Firm clubs separated by just a point at the top of the SPL heading into the international break.

“That’s why even in the window there we were saying everybody was expecting Celtic to go and spend big,” said McCulloch.

“I know we’ve spoken about this a few times and, they’ve obviously thought let’s take the gamble and not got any so-called big-hitters in. It will just be interesting to see how it pans out because it could still go either way for me.”

Rangers and Celtic neck and neck in title race

There is very little currently separating Rangers and Celtic as we look set to have a thrilling final few weeks of the season on our hands.

The Gers have been in excellent form since Philippe Clement arrived at Ibrox in October, but after their game against Dundee was postponed on Sunday, it’s the Hoops that sit top of the table.

While the Light Blues do have a game in hand on their Old Firm rivals, it will have been incredibly frustrating for them to not have been given the chance to earn their top spot back.

It’s been a mixed season for Brendan Rodgers’s side as the performances haven’t always been great and they were expected to strengthen in the January window.

Whether or not their Old Firm victory on 30 December gave them a feeling that big signings weren’t necessary is anyone’s guess, but they could come back to rue that decision if the title heads to Ibrox.
