Rangers to release Borna Barisic as Ibrox exit development emerges
Borna Barisic is set to be released by Rangers when his contract runs out at the end of the season, according to Taka Gazete.
The Turkish news outlet reported on its website that the Croatian international has entered into negotiations with Super Lig club Trabzonspor about the possibility of signing for them on a free transfer.
That means the 31-year-old left-back has less than 16 weeks to go before he will make an emotional departure from the Gers when his deal expires on 1 July after spending the past six years at Ibrox.
Borna Barisic has been excellent servant for Rangers
There is no questioning the commitment Barisic has shown to Rangers since he joined the club from Osijek in 2018.
The left-back has made 230 appearances for the Gers during that time, having scored 10 goals and laid on 54 assists with his pinpoint delivery from out wide.
The Croatian played a huge role in helping the club lift their 55th league title in 2021 and reach the Europa League final in 2022.
But after Ridvan Yilmaz was previously brought in to become the club’s long-term successor on the left-hand side of the defence, the Turkish international has finally jumped ahead of Barisic in the pecking order under Philippe Clement.
He will no doubt still have a role to play over the next few weeks, but once his deal finally does expire, the Light Blues fans will wish him luck in the next chapter of his career.
