How many points Leicester City need to secure promotion and the title
Leicester City picked up a big three points in the race at the top of the Championship on Tuesday night, as they returned to winning ways.
Who else but Jamie Vardy scored the winning goal with just 13 minutes on the clock in what was a productive opening 15 minutes for the team. Despite late pressure from the home side, City were able to hold on to take all three points and end a run of three straight defeats in the league.
After their own games, eyes may turn to rivals’ results. Both Leeds and Ipswich picked up all three points from their home encounters against Stoke City and Bristol City.
But, the position that City are in means that their fate is in their own hands. Enzo Maresca’s men therefore have a specific target to aim for.
The three points against the Black Cats has seen the maximum number of points needed by City to secure automatic promotion reduce to 26 in the final 10 games of the season. At one point on Tuesday night, it looked like the same amount would be needed to secure the title, but Ipswich’s comeback against Bristol City means that a maximum of 28 points will be needed for City to guarantee finishing the season at the top of the table, although second place Ipswich have a much worse goal difference, meaning that 27 points may be enough to finish as champions.
City are next in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Hull City at the MKM Stadium. The Tigers drew 1-1 with Bristol City on Tuesday night, a result which leaves them in sixth place in the table.
City will be looking to avenge a 1-0 loss against Liam Rosenior’s side In the reverse fixture. If they can do so, then they will continue to chip away at the points needed and reduce the average needed from the final nine games of the campaign.
