‘Certainty’ – Barry Ferguson moots Ibrox transfer exit
Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland could be set for a summer transfer exit if he does play a part in England’s Euro 2024 campaign, according to Barry Ferguson.
The Englishman has been in inspired form for Philippe Clement’s side this season and pulled off a number of superb saves to keep the Light Blues’ in their 2-1 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday (28 February).
Butland’s impressive displays haven’t gone unnoticed and Gareth Southgate is considering recalling the Gers stopper ahead of Euro 2024, but Ferguson admits that may increase the transfer interest in him from the Premier League.
Writing for the Daily Record on Friday (1 March) he said: “He’s a certainty to make the next England squad and if Gareth Southgate doesn’t take him to the Euros this summer I’ll be very surprised.
“No one is going to tell me that he’s not every bit as good or better than the likes of Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone or Nick Pope.
“And yes, I don’t even want to think about what might happen in the summer if he does head to Germany and then clubs in the Premier League realise what they’ve missed out on.”
Will Rangers’ Jack Butland play for England at Euro 2024?
While a number of Michael Beale’s summer signings at Ibrox took a while to find their feet in Glasgow, Butland has impressed from his first outing in a Rangers shirt and he has been a revelation under Clement’s management.
The Englishman’s impressive displays have warranted an international recall, but that could well make it hard for the Light Blues to keep the 30-year-old in Glasgow beyond the end of the season.
Butland has insisted that he was never keen to leave Ibrox during the January transfer window, despite interest from Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, but that could change if big offers arrive during the summer transfer window.
A lot could change over the next few months, but Ferguson might be right to be slightly worried that an international recall may not be as beneficial to Rangers as it could be for Butland and his career.
