Future £14.5m deal for new star is an absolute bargain for Leicester City

Leicester City recruited Ghanaian star Abdul Fatawu on loan from Sporting CP in the summer, but it does seem he’s poised for a more long-term stay at the club.

Leicester City announced their deal for Fatawu on their official club website, though the statement made no mention of an option to make it permanent at the time. However, reports from Portugal moved to shed light on the details of the agreement earlier this season.

Record stated that an obligation to buy Fatawu should the Foxes win promotion was included in the deal. That clause came in at €17m, or £14.5m.

For a 19-year-old with only 12 senior appearances for Sporting, some may have thought that to be a little steep earlier in the season. Over recent months though, Fatawu has proven just why he’s been touted for such a bright future, and come the end of the season, that eight-figure outlay could prove to be an absolute bargain.

A new star for Maresca

There were bright signs from Fatawu early into his Leicester City loan but he’s really put the pedal to the metal in recent months. He’s locked doown a starting spot on the right-hand side and in 30 games, he’s tallied up four goals and nine assists for Enzo Maresca.

His latest moment of magic came on Tuesday night, curling home a fantastic extra-time winner in the FA Cup against Bournemouth.

Instances of sheer quality like that highlight the special things Fatawu is capable of, but his constant threat on the wing makes him a threat across entire games, not just in game-changing moments like that. For someone who can do that at just 19, £14.5m could prove to be a real bargain.

Of course, triggering the obligation depends on winning promotion from the Championship. Leicester City are still in a great position to do so, sitting top of the Championship table and six points clear despite back-to-back defeats in the league.

With promotion widely expected, Leicester won’t only have a Premier League return to celebrate. The triggering of the Fatawu obligation will be another matter to raise a glass to, with a £14.5m deal marking a bargain deal for a star of the present and future.
