Manchester United have been urged to ‘just get it done’ as Newcastle United hold firm on their demands to cut short Dan Ashworth’s notice period.
Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave after informing Newcastle that he wished to leave the Magpies following just 20 months as sporting director. Darren Eales admitted the club were ‘naturally disappointed’ with Ashworth’s decision after the CEO had previously been ‘hopeful’ the 52-year-old was at St James’ Park for the long-term.However, Newcastle are not about to roll over as Manchester United attempt to negotiate a compensation package. Eddie Howe warned ‘we are very protective of what’s ours’ and Newcastle are asking for an eight-figure fee of up to £20m to release Ashworth from his contractual obligations.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe labelled the demands ‘silly’ and the Manchester United part-owner went as far as to say that the prospect of Ashworth ‘siting in his garden’ for up to two years was ‘absurd’. Tom Lockyer, however, echoed Gary Neville’s thoughts – the Manchester United legend suggested coughing up could prevent his former side ‘blowing another £100m on poor moves in the next transfer window’ – as the Luton captain gave a player’s perspective.
“The players will be aware of what’s going on but, for me, if that’s the route you’re going to go down, £20 million, what’s that nowadays?” he told the BBC. When it was put to Lockyer that would be the price of a back-up right-back, the Wales international responded: “Exactly. Just get it done. If I’m Man United, and they want him in, just get it done.”
