Gordon Parks blasts Rangers star after what he saw in Glasgow
Journalist Gordon Parks has blasted Rangers star James Tavernier and says he doesn’t have the “aura” or “personality” to be captain of the Ibrox club.
Speaking while appearing on PLZ Soccer (21 February), the Daily Record journalist recalled an occasion where he saw the defender head into Five Guys restaurant for a burger in Glasgow.
And Parks believes that his lack of aura was on show for all to see on that occasion, and says that it proves he isn’t the right man to be captain of the Bears.
“I was in Glasgow city centre a couple of days ago, literally an hour after full-time whistle,” he said. “A big Jeep pulls up outside Five Guys.
“Tavernier gets out with his Rangers tracksuit on and his Rangers jacket and went into Five Guys for a burger.
“I take on board everything you’ve said, he’s technically a very good player. But he lacks the aura and personality. He’s nondescriptly heading into Five Guys.
“If that’s Richard Gough, Barry Ferguson, or a Greig at that time, you kind of exude not going into Five Guys for a burger. Scoring phenomenal, but the gravitas you carry at the club as the captain, I think he lacks that personally.”
Gordon Parks can’t be serious about the Rangers captaincy?
There are plenty of things to criticise Tavernier about, and whether he is the right man for the captaincy is something that has been discussed in recent months.
But if you believe that this is a reason for that to be proven correct then you’re as crazy as Parks is, because it has absolutely no basis behind it whatsoever.
The biggest difference between Tavernier and the players that were mentioned is the fact that social media exists now, and players are much closer to fans nowadays and far more accessible.
But aside from that he’s not Scottish or a lifelong Rangers fan either, so he immediately wouldn’t have the connection with the locals that they had.
Ultimately it means absolutely nothing that he wasn’t mobbed after a game while in public. He is the right man in the current squad to lead them and if he lifts number 56 this season everyone will stop doubting him.
