Rangers: BBC pundit shares why clubs want to sign player

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland is attracting interest from other clubs because he has been consistent all season.

That is according to former Gers striker Billy Dodds, who labelled the number one “incredible” during the match against Ross County on Wednesday (14 February).

Butland played as Rangers won 3-1 at Ibrox, with the goalkeeper having received a January transfer approach from Nottingham Forest [STV News, 31 January].

“As the season has gone on he has not been needed that much, but the odd save he has to make has been incredible at times,” Dodds said on BBC Sportsound (8.07pm, 14 February). “But he has been consistent all season, that’s why he’s getting these clubs interested in him.”

Butland to leave Rangers?

Not all of Michael Beale’s summer signings have paid off, but Butland’s move certainly has, with the goalkeeper immediately hitting the ground running at Ibrox.

He had really big gloves to fill following the retirement of club legend Allan McGregor, but he has performed admirably thus far.

The displays have seemingly caught the eye in more ways than one, with Forest keen to bring the goalkeeper back to the Premier League, while England manager Gareth Southgate is interested in bringing him back into the England setup.

It will be interesting to follow any developments with both of those situations, but the Ibrox position on the former is clear, having issued a hands-off warning last month.

The club chiefs are hoping that Philippe Clement’s silverware chase this season can convince Butland to stay and regain his England place by remaining at Ibrox.

And that should be the stance from the powers that be for as long as possible, with the goalkeeper a very key player for his manager.
