Gers could sign a £3 million summer striker; he’s now very hot.
When Michael Beale made Sam Lammers is first signing of the summer transfer window for Rangers, we were promised something different in the forward line.
Unfortunately for the then Gers boss, that’s exactly what we got as the Dutchman contrived to fire blanks in front of goal for the man who signed him and Philippe Clement.
Moving on loan to Utrecht has seen Sam Lammers reborn though, three assists and one goal in five games means that his time at Rangers might not be a total waste of money.
Sam Lammers finds form after Rangers disappointment
For a reported £3m, the 26-year old wasn’t cheap.
Fans wanted wingers to replace players like Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala, instead, we saw another number ten arrive.
Todd Cantwell’s current form proving that this is the last thing that we needed.
A move back to the Eredivisie has been beneficial so far though, what has made it all the more interesting is that he has been playing as an out and out striker rather than in the space behind.
Given the injury issues to Danilo and Kemar Roofe, it was a surprise to never see him tried in this role before Fabio Silva was signed.
As a youngster for PSV Eindhoven, this is where Lammers made his name and even drew comparisons to Ruud van Nistelrooy, believe it or not.
His form shouldn’t be seen as something to shake our heads at.
It’s clear that it isn’t going to work out at Rangers and that Nils Koppen will look to move Sam Lammers on in the summer.
Getting every penny of the £3m back might be a stretch but, on his current form, we should be hopeful of being able to recoup most of it.
With Philippe Clement looking to rebuild a squad and replace those who can’t be relied upon, every penny helps.
