Super Bowl 2024: 49ers player who tussled with Eagles’ security chief carted off with injury (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Later in the second quarter, Dre Greenlaw was unsurprisingly ruled out for the rest of Sunday’s Super Bowl. He is believed to have suffered a torn Achilles tendon, according to NFL Network.

49ers injury news: Dre Greenlaw has torn Achilles

Dre Greenlaw — who Giants and Eagles fans know quite well — suffered a freak injury in Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII against the Chiefs.

Greenlaw, a 49ers linebacker, sustained a non-contact lower left leg injury in the second quarter. He couldn’t put any weight on his leg and was carted to the locker room.

Greenlaw got hurt while trying to run back onto the field in between drives. It was later revealed that he has an Achilles injury. And while he is officially listed as questionable to return, he probably has a torn Achilles. So don’t bet on seeing him again for the rest of Sunday’s game.

Eagles fans know Greenlaw because he was involved in that infamous sideline altercation with Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro this past regular season. That resulted in DiSandro being banned from the sideline for the rest of the regular season.

And as it turns out, DiSandro was on the Chiefs’ sideline in Las Vegas — at least before the game — to greet former Eagles coach Andy Reid, who now coaches the Chiefs

Giants fans know Greenlaw because he blasted quarterback Daniel Jones’ contract after the 49ers crushed the Giants in San Francisco last season.

Both the Giants and Eagles suffered crushing defeats against the 49ers in 2023. The 49ers beat the Giants 30-12 in Week 3. And then they beat the Eagles 42-19 in Week 13.

That game made it clear the 49ers — and not the Eagles — were the team to beat in the NFC.
