Crystal Palace want to sack manager Roy Hodgson but the club’s preferred replacement Steve Cooper is not willing to take the job mid-season, sources have told Netsport insiders.

The ex-Nottingham Forest boss has been approached by Palace about taking over from Hodgson, 76, with immediate effect.

However, the Welshman prefers to wait until the summer – when the veteran boss is out of contract and will leave Selhurst Park.

It is believed Cooper, 44, wants the luxury of a full pre-season at any new job to fully implement his methods.

He has been out of a job since being sacked at Nottingham Forest earlier in the 2023-24 campaign.

Hodgson is on the brink at Selhurst Park following a 4-1 embarrassment at the hands of rivals Brighton on Saturday (3 February).

He led Palace to a crucial win over Sheffield United last week but the Croydon club are just five points above the Premier League relegation zone with 15 games left to play.

Protest banners against the ownership of Steve Parish were unfurled during the Brighton loss.

Hodgson returned to Palace in March 2023 and helped them avoid relegation last term before signing a one-year extension in the summer.

Cooper had won just one of his last 13 Premier League games at Nottingham Forest and left the Midlands club 17th in the table.

He achieved promotion with Forest in 2022 and helped them stay in the Premier League last season
