The seemingly impossible task Clement has achieved
Philippe Clement is fired up for his meeting with Scott Brown after stating, he “doesn’t really like Rangers”.
The Ibrox boss watched on as Todd Cantwell’s winner against Aberdeen sent his side level on points with Celtic at the top of the Premiership table after a dramatic night under the lights in Govan. Just ONE goal separates the Old Firm rivals at the summit with Brendan Rodgers’ team visiting Easter Road tonight to face Hibs – a venue the current Hoops gaffer has never won at. Rangers then play their final game in hand next midweek against Ross County after parking league duty this weekend for the Scottish Cup tie.
Fate has a wonderful way of working and after drawing Ayr United in the fifth round, it was always going to be legendary Celtic skipper Brown who landed the top job at Somerset Park once Lee Bullen was axed. The Hoops hero started with a win over Queen’s Park before defeat to Dundee United last time out. He’s now set for Ibrox in a much different capacity than he is used to and Clement is well aware that he is NOT a fan of the hosts.
He told Rangers TV: “I’m looking forward to the weekend fixture, yeah, of course. Again a challenge in a competition where it is in or out against a manager that doesn’t really like Rangers. So it is going to be an interesting game to play.”
Rabbi Matondo got Rangers off to a flyer at Ibrox last night as he turned home on the rebound after Kelle Roos pushed out a tame effort into his path. The home side bossed the opening period but Bojan Miovski only needs that one chance and when he latched onto a hooked ball over the top from Connor Barron, he held off Connor Goldson before firing beyond Jack Butland.
Clement and his troops pushed for the winner and he made changes to try and get a spark out of his team and it was the in-form Cantwell who fired home, again on the rebound, after Roos had denied Tom Lawrence from range. There was also a big VAR moment when Don Robertson was sent to the screen to review his red card decision for a tackle from Dujon Sterling but the man in the middle STUCK with his original call – a rarely seen outcome in the Scottish game since the introduction of the technology.
Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton also got involved in a Sky Sports studio debate over potential Connor Goldson ‘handballs’ after host Eilidh Barbour asked the former Celtic and Rangers men their opinions on the incidents in the final stages of the fiery encounter.
