‘Sellable’ Rangers man finished at Ibrox, £5m transfer mooted – Stevie Clifford

Stevie Clifford has admitted that he doesn’t think Ianis Hagi will ever play for Rangers again and expects him to be sold following this summer’s European Championships.

The Romanian midfielder is spending the season on loan in La Liga with Deportivo Alaves but has struggled for form during his time in Spain, only managing to pick up a single assist in 14 league appearances.

Hagi has two and a half years remaining on his contract at Ibrox, but Clifford believes Philippe Clement will look to sell the 25-year-old at the end of the season for a fee potentially in the region of £5million.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (1 February, 22:20) he said: “I wouldn’t think so, I believe he is a sellable asset and in the summer we will probably have to sell a few and regroup that squad and he is probably one that we would look and say we’ve got some value there.

“I don’t think we could have brought him back in January, as far as I’m aware, we didn’t have that option so I’m not sure Hagi will return in a Rangers jersey. I think if he has a good Euros and we get £5million for him we’ll say thanks for 55 and shake his hand.”

No future

A few months ago, Rangers fans were pining for the Light Blues to recall Hagi from his loan spell in Spain as they felt he would boost the side’s title hopes following a poor start to the campaign under Michael Beale.

However, it has only taken a couple of weeks for most to assume that the Romanian international is finished in Glasgow and now seems unlikely that he will ever play for the Gers again.

Hagi’s age and status as an international player, who could potentially play at this summer’s Euros, means that he is a sellable asset and should he perform well in Germany, the Light Blues could raise a reasonable fee.

This could be one to keep an eye on towards the end of the season, especially if Hagi’s form begins to pick up towards the end of the campaign.
