‘He wouldn’t even get a game in the Scottish Premiership’ – McAvennie savages Rangers loanee

Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry “won’t get a game” at a top-flight club following his poor loan spell with Hearts.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie claimed that the 20-year-old needs to drop down to the Scottish Championship to “get his strength”.

Lowry was sent back to the Gers from his spell at the Edinburgh club, having made 17 appearances and notching one goal.

Philippe Clement confirmed that the midfielder returned with an injury that could keep him sidelined for up to eight weeks, but admitted it would be “difficult for him to get minutes” at Ibrox.

McAvennie feels the top flight is too much for the youngster if he struggled to break into Steven Naismith’s side and urged him to develop away from Glasgow.

“If he’s not getting a game for Hearts, he’s not going to get a game for Rangers,” he told Football Insider.

“He wouldn’t even get a game in the Scottish Premiership.

“Loan him out to a Championship club and get him actual games.

“He can’t do a lot in the first division, he can get away with a lot more down there.

“He’ll get his strength and he’ll learn how to avoid tackles and get away from defenders.

“Sometimes it’s not a bad thing to take a step backwards.

“He won’t get a game at a Premiership club if he’s not playing for Hearts.

“It’s a strange one.”
