Philippe Clement commends the 26-year-old who is expected to leave for £500k.
Philippe Clement praised the contribution of Scott Wright despite hooking the Rangers winger at half-time in the victory over St Mirren.
The 26-year-old attacker was given his second start under the Belgian manager in Paisley and his first berth in the starting XI since the 5-0 win over Dundee in November.
The Rangers boss has previously been clear that he will utilise his squad over the season and it was a rare opportunity for the former Aberdeen star to impress.
But as Scott Wright was hooked alongside Todd Cantwell at half-time – for Ross McCausland and Tom Lawrence respectively – you’ll forgive Ibrox supporters for believing that he failed to take it.
Philippe Clement on Scott Wright sub
Speaking after the eventual 1-0 victory, Rangers boss Clement claimed that the substitutions were made with victory in mind in tough conditions on a tough pitch in Paisley.
Also praising the contribution of both Scott Wright and Todd Cantwell after the game, the decisions appeared purely tactical and anything but personal.
“No it’s different things,” said Clement when asked if the substitutions were about the fitness of either player.
“It’s a bit tactical, it’s also to get freshness in. So it’s a little bit of both but it’s not about who’s starting or who’s ending the game, it’s about winning them together.
“And also the two players who came off at that moment they had an important part in the first half.
“So it’s a team performance. It’s a team that we are building and you see it more and more, whoever is playing everybody is doing a job for the team, everybody is celebrating together, everybody is fighting together.
“That’s what I want to see until the end of the season.”
Rangers winger has never fully grabbed chance
Whilst Philippe Clement has shown that he is not shy about making changes, the situation with Scott Wright has certainly caught the eye of Rangers fans.
Signed in the January of 2021 during the reign of Steven Gerrard, it’s been three years since Wright joined the Gers but despite a number of opportunities fans are still not seeing enough from the player.
Reserving his best Rangers performances in the cup competitions – where Wright has scored in both the League and Scottish Cups this season and scored in the Scottish Cup Final win over Hearts in 2022 – returns have by and large disappointed.
Making a quite remarkable 102 appearances for Rangers – including 18 this season and in the Europa League Final of 2022 – the winger’s ten goals and seven assists have not been enough for expectant fans.
Almost shipped out of the club this summer, but for a £500k move to Turkish side Pendikspor to fall through at the last minute, Scott Wright’s role at Rangers continues to perplex.
Whilst Wright was given a chance v St Mirren, one wonders if, as Philippe Clement’s tenure develops, the frustrating winger is beginning to run out of them.
