Sky Sports journalist makes Rangers”seven or eight” claim

There were a few nerves before Rangers return to the Premiership against Hibernian but there shouldn’t have been after a dominant display.

Gers boss Philippe Clement got his team selection right with both wingers providing assists and Ridvan Yilmaz proving why he is now first-choice left back in the squad.

Despite Jack Butland having a couple of big moments, the most impressive aspect of Rangers win over Hibernian is that it could have been a lot more.

Rangers could have ran riot against Hibernian

For context, David Marshall didn’t have a good game and still did well to keep the score down to three.

One positive aspect is that Clement was able to make changes at half-time and they had a positive effect.

How many times this season has the manager been looking at a bench of fringe or academy players?

This was a contributing factor in the display with Sky Sports producer and former Rangers TV media team member Andrew Dickson was clearly impressed with what he saw:

“A very comfortable night for Rangers, should have won by more and could easily have had seven or eight.

“Gap down to five points with a game in hand and last lost a top-flight game at Easter Road in September 2006. No wonder the Hibees booed at the end, a really handsome victory.”

Dickson is right, it could have been seven or eight which, despite being right about Butland’s contribution, makes Nick Montgomery’s comments on it not being a 3-0 game all the more strange.

Rangers were aggressive in the press, seemed to win every second ball and attacked with pace.

A far cry from what we were seeing at the beginning of the season.

It’s easy to forget that key players were missing from Easter Road, and yet, there was no real drop in the level of performance that we have seen recently from a Philippe Clement Rangers team.

Another, more clinical forward or two, and we could yet see the sort of score-line that Dickson is talking about.
